Known more for his tendency to take mafia bribes and constant schmoozing of the ladies, people tend to overlook his once-glowing career as a police officer. After his father's tenacious pushing he entered the force at age 19 with more-or-less pure intentions, but as he moved through the years and up the hierarchy, the lack of money and the constant stress of the job wore on his patience.

His family had been moderately wealthy and he was used to living a comfortable existence. We all know police work is not where fortunes are made. His conscience finally broke when he saw the women that surrounded the men of the mafia. Since a young age Sykes was described as a "charmer" (and harrasser to those who aren't interested), flirting with attractive women where-ever he went. His youth was spent womanizing and drinking in the bars, but when the law prohibited alcohol his main watering holes dried up and the loose beauties were hard to find in reputable places.

He was a Lieutenant when he took his first bribe from the up-and-coming crime lord Henrique Candino, which was the beginning of a long-lasting silent partnership. Although Sykes does not agree with many of the mafia's practices, he is a prisoner of his own greed. He managed to keep his under-the-table dealings silent enough to inherit the title of Chief when the former chief retired, much to the dismay of his fellow Captain (at the time) Henry Samsung. Since then he has become less tight-beaked about the matter, openly flaunting his wealth and allowing himself to be seen publicly imbibing alcohol with members of Ric's empire.

Many calls have been made for him to be removed from his position, including some from women who have been sexually propositioned by him, but his ties to such a strong and influential crime lord have made other officials wary for their safety. He is safe as long as Ric stays in power.
